PARIS GAELS GAA CLUB - BRIEF HISTORY (page 2/2)

In February of 1998, a team of Hurlers and Footballers travelled from Glynnbarntown (Wexford) to Paris to take on Paris Gaels, both games were very close with Glynnbarntown narrowly beating the Paris selection. The weekend of Gaelic sports also brought the Liam McCarthy cup to Paris for the first time ever.

September of 1998 also was a memorable experience for the club, for the first time a team from Europe were represented in the International Gaelic Football Competition at St. Vincent's GAA grounds in Dublin.

October 1999, Paris Gaels welcomed St. Margaret's GAA club from the Fingal area to Paris. A friendly match of Hurling and Gaelic Football was played in a friendly manner (despite the reputation of St. Margarets) which was a great success for both clubs. These links with Irish based GAA clubs hope to be maintained in our future efforts to promote our national games abroad.

April 2000 was a memorable date for Paris Gaels GAA Club. The first ever 11 aside Gaelic Football Tournament took place in Paris, teams were represented from Jersey, Guernsey, Rennes, Luxembourg and The Hague. The games were attended by An Uachtaran Mr. Joe McDonagh among many others. Finally the Tara Plant Hire cup did not need to travel far as Paris Gaels won against a closely contested final with Guernsey Gaels.
